Integrated Hybrid Electric-Diesel Propulsion
Originally created on April 16 2008
The flywheel of an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) is the locus of energy concentration derived from internal combustion. We saw a few years ago an innovative approach with Yanmar harnessing this energy to build into the ICE an generation capability of 6kva. Now a consortium centered around a Slovenian company ISKRA we will be reporting about soon has taken this concept a step further, transforming this flywheel not only into a generator but also a drive motor, booster motor and a starter motor as well.
Conceptually the advantages are very interesting and a number of companies are seeking to harness the concept and perhaps breath some extra life into the diesel ICE. Beyond Steyr that has already introduced the system, expect other such as Vetus, Nanni Diesel and others to develop hybrid systems. Companies like Yanmar (already with a 6kw flywheel generator as mentioned above) and Volvo will make confusing offerings to the market.
We will report shortly on the flywheel concept.
