Toyota has announced it would be producing a plug-in hybrid vehicle by 2010 using a lithium ion battery, departure from what it has said in the past. This more aggressive schedule and the announced objective of selling hybrid vehicles in 2010, its affirmed confidence in lithium ion technology, puts Toyota on a crash coarse with GM in a race to bring the first mass-market plug-in hybrid to market. Toyota and Panasonic have a joint venture in Japan, called Panasonic Electric Vehicle Energy, that produces batteries for the Prius. Toyota said Sunday that the venture, 60 percent owned by Toyota and 40 percent by Panasonic, would add a separate line at its assembly plant to produce lithium-ion batteries.

Perhaps the most exciting battery technology emerging today is developed by Altair Nanotechnologies, a Lithium Titanium Oxide technology that promises what every mariner dreams about in a battery and totally shifts the energy storage paradigm. Then again, development at Valence Technology where product roll-out is happening is not a blue sky announcement. Next week will be particularly interesting as the International Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition (EVS-23) starting Sunday at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim will set the scene for the presentation of many new technologies and advancements, one of the most awaited being from Exxon-Mobil scheduled to present a revolutionary thin film applicable to Lithium Ion battery technology.
