There is no such thing as fortuitous luck at sea. The reason why some boaters survive storms or have fewer accidents than others is that they earn their luck by diligent and constant acts of seamanship. Aboard every boat there's an invisible black box. Every time a skipper takes the trouble to consult the chart, inspect the filters, go forward on a rainy night to check the running lights, or take any other proper seamanlike precaution, he or she earns a point that goes into the black box. In times of stress, in heavy weather or other threatening circumstances where human skill and effort can accomplish no more, the points are cashed in as protection... Those skippers with no points in the box are the ones later described as unlucky. The skipper has no control over the withdrawal of points, and once points have been removed, then the skipper must immediately start to replenish their savings, for the sea offers no credit.

Je muse (avec beaucoup d'humilité) sur une citation de John Vigor dans son livre "Practical Mariner's Book of Knowledge", dans le passage il muse en son temps sur les marins qui se plaignent des malheurs qui leur arrivent, du mauvais temps aux mauvaises rencontres, il articule la théorie suivante: La chance fortuite en mer n'existe pas. La raison pour laquelle certains marins survivent à la tempête ou sont victimes de moins d'accidents que d'autres réside dans le fait qu'ils gagnent leur chance par des actions constantes et diligentes qui contribuent à l'art de navigation ("seamanship"). A bord de tout navire il y a une boite noire invisible. Chaque fois qu'un skipper fait l'effort de consulter la carte, vérifier un filtre, monter en proue une nuit de pluie vérifier les feux ou quel qu'autre acte de précaution relatif à cet art "seamanlike" , il ou elle gagne un point pour la boite noire. En période de stress, par gros temps ou autre circonstance menaçante lors de laquelle l'effort et l'habileté humaine sont tirés aux limites les points sont engagés comme protection. Les skippers qui n'ont pas de points sont ceux décrits à postériori comme malchanceux. Le skipper n'a aucun contrôle sur l'utilisation des points, aussi, une fois ces points consommés il se doit immédiatement de commencer à regarnir la boite noire de points car la mer ne fait pas crédit.
